Hiking to a waterfall can be an unforgettable experience. Beyond the stunning scenic views,  the sound of rushing water has a calming effect on the mind and soul, creating a peaceful and serene atmosphere. The tranquil ambiance of a waterfall can provide a much-needed escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, allowing you to reconnect with nature and yourself.

It's a great way to get outside, explore nature, and get some exercise. In this blog, we'll share the top 3 must-visit waterfalls that you can easily access from Shasta View Lodge in McCloud, California.

Hedge Creek Falls

#3 Hedge Creek Falls

Hedge Creek Falls is a hidden gem located near the little town of Dunsmuir, just south of Mount Shasta and McCloud. This waterfall cascades over a moss-covered rock wall and offers a serene and peaceful setting. What’s unique about Hedge Creek Falls is that you can actually walk behind it through a small cave-like opening. The short hike down to the falls is a pleasant one, passing through a lush forest with ferns and moss-covered rocks. Once you reach the waterfall, you can take a staircase down to the base and experience the refreshing mist as the water plunges 30 feet into a picturesque pool. Hedge Creek Falls is a great spot for a picnic or a quiet moment surrounded by the beauty of nature.

Burney Falls

#2 Burney Falls

About an hour's drive from Shasta View Lodge, Burney Falls is a must-see waterfall that is often referred to as the "Eighth Wonder of the World” due to its unique and mesmerizing beauty. The waterfall plunges over 100 feet into a turquoise pool surrounded by lush vegetation, creating an instagram-worthy scene. It flows year-round and is fed by underground springs, which creates a constant flow of water even during the dry season. The park also offers picnic areas and hiking trails, making it a perfect destination for a day trip.

#1 McCloud Falls

Located in the same town as Shasta View Lodge, McCloud Falls is a series of three breathtaking waterfalls along the McCloud River just east of Mt Shasta. The Lower, Middle, and Upper Falls each offer their own unique features and can be accessed via an easy-to-moderate hiking trail. Lower Falls is the easiest to access, with a short paved trail leading to a viewpoint that offers a stunning view of the waterfall cascading over a basalt cliff. Middle Falls is the tallest of the three, with a height of 50 feet, and it's known for its picturesque setting with a large pool at the base where you can swim in the summer/fall (or cold plunge Wim Hoff style in the springtime!). Upper Falls, located further upstream, is the smallest but is still a sight to behold with its rugged rocks and pristine water. The McCloud Falls are a must-visit for anyone exploring the Mount Shasta area.

Hiking to a waterfall is an adventure in itself. Exploring new trails, navigating through rugged landscapes, and discovering hidden gems can provide a sense of exploration and discovery that is both thrilling and fulfilling.
